So Long, Phoenix!

Camelback Mountain

It has been quite a whirlwind lately, working and visiting with family every day. First my sister Amy came, then my parents, followed by Cammie and her boyfriend, Brian. Amy's oldest son, Nate, lives here in Mesa, so we got to visit with him too. My parents stayed with Amy in her condo, and Cammie and Brian stayed with me in the motorhome, so there was a lot of running back and forth to the condo. It was so good to spend time with them, and I'm feeling a bit abandoned now that everyone has gone home. That's one thing that is difficult about this traveling lifestyle -- missing family. I just don't get to see them enough.

My parents really liked the Phoenix area, and they were looking at retirement homes and other properties while they were here, with the idea that they will sell their house in Minnesota and move here. There are some great deals to be had on real estate in Phoenix right now. They were trying to talk me into moving to Phoenix too, but I don't think I could handle the summers. I like to be outside too much.

Work did not go very well for me here in Phoenix, so I'm looking forward to moving on to Tucson. If sales don't go well in Tucson, then I will be looking for another way to make a living, or maybe another part-time job to supplement my Air Photo income.

The weather has been gorgeous. I had a nice, little bike ride this morning, then spent the rest of the day getting ready to move. I think I will like being in Tucson. It looks like there are plenty of fun things to do in that area. Is anyone out there located in Tucson?

Rylie's Notes:

It was good seeing the Junior Staff, the Grand Staff and the Sibling Staff, but I noticed that I was not invited over to the condo for dinner. I miss out on all of the fun! Hmph!

Phoenix Economy

After working around the Phoenix area for awhile, I can see why sales are so poor here. This area has been hit very hard by the economy. Real estate values have taken a huge dive, and there are TONS of homes for sale. I heard the other day that 1 in every 182 properties is in foreclosure, and that property values have fallen 49%. Unemployment is high too. Of course, I hear different statistics every day, but it seems like a good time to buy a home in Phoenix, if that is where you want to be. I like the weather, but my first choice would be to live in the Central Coast area of California.

I don't have much to report. I have been working more days than usual because sales are so poor, and I'm spending as much time with my family as I can when I'm not working, which means going over to the condo where they are staying with Amy. Poor Rylie has been spending more time alone, and he is not happy about it.

Rylie's Notes:

I have been sentenced to solitary confinement, and I didn't even have a trial! I'm only getting out of this tin can for one hour a day when The Staff walks me, and the rest of the time I nap and stare out the window. Get me outta here!

Family Time

My parents will be arriving from Minnesota today for a two week visit. Amy has a two bedroom condo in Scottsdale, so they will be staying with her while they are here. I'm so excited to see them! It has been about a year and a half since I saw them in Minnesota, so I'm really missing them. To make it even better, Cammie and Brian will also be coming to visit while my parents are here, but only for five days. We'll have some good family fun, I'm sure.

We've been having some rain and even hail, and the temperatures have been cooler than normal the past few days, but my parents assure me that they can handle it. It will still be better than what's happening in Minnesota. They had an ice storm last night.

Sales have been very poor for me here in Phoenix, so I will be moving on March 1st. It's funny that Yuma was my best area, but Phoenix has been the worst. I'm going to try Tucson for a month to see if that's any better, and then I will most likely head to the Bay Area.

I learned yesterday that I need to get a solicitor's license in order to work in Paradise Valley, and that takes a few days. I can't work for the next few days until I get my license, so I have some forced time off. Although I need the money, the timing is actually pretty good, because I can spend some time with my parents. So today I will catch up on some things, and give Rylie a bath before picking up my parents at the airport. Rylie is going to be so excited to see my parents, and Cammie too when she gets here.

Rylie's Notes:

Uh oh. A bath? I don't like the sound of that. I'm going to be happy to see The Substitute Staff and The Junior Staff, but I don't see why a bath is needed. I think I smell much better without one.

I am really enjoying the winter weather in Phoenix, and it has been so nice having Amy here. Last week I moved to a different RV park that is closer to Scottsdale where Amy is staying, and closer to my current work area. Amy and I have been sampling some of the tasty vittles at the Scottsdale restaurants, like Houston's, Blanco, The Roaring Fork, and the Village Tavern. There is a lot of shopping and eating to be done in Scottsdale. Plenty of golf courses, too.

Last week I had lunch with a bunch of my Air Photo co-workers. It was nice to meet some of my co-workers and meet up with some of the ones I've met previously. We all shared our funny work stories and compared notes, so it was a lot of fun. Sales have slowed down quite a bit since the holidays, and most everyone seems to be feeling the pinch.

The last time I rode my bike in Yuma I got a thorn in my tire, and it has been flat ever since. I finally had the chance to get the tire repaired, so I am finally ready for another bike ride. I haven't taken many days off since I've been here, so I think it's time for a day off.

I'm so excited! My parents are coming to visit in a week, and they will be staying with Amy for two weeks. I'm really looking forward to spending time with them. Julie and Bob have only been in Hawaii for two weeks, and they are already in escrow on a house on the Kona side of the island. They work fast! They will have a spare bedroom, so something tells me they won't have any shortage of visitors.

Amy and I went out to watch the Superbowl, and boy was that an exciting game. And I don't even like football! I was really rooting for the Cardinals, though. Too bad.

Rylie's Notes:

We have a very serious situation going on here at home. We are down to the very last chicken strip! What the heck is going on? Why isn't The Staff running off to the PetsMart? This is scary!
